Highly-intelligent energy management systems are expected to ensure CO2 -free energy supply to our communities. enocoo not only optimizes energy consumption, but also significantly reduces utility costs for users. This requires large amounts of personal data. The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) lays down the strictest data protection rules in the world.
Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have therefore developed their own data protection technology together with enocoo.
An effective energy management system like enocoo only works if there is sufficient data available to control it. The more data, the more intelligently and purposefully energy can be stored and used. In addition, the system also needs to charge for the energy costs for each household in a way that is legally compliant and comprehensible for everyone.
This could create conflicts with the GDPR, which requires that data subjects must always give their consent to data processing. Of course, this also applies to the residents of the neighborhoods where the energy management system is used.
This is still nowhere near enough though. For example, there is an additional requirement that the data must be anonymized and only used for the specified purpose while adhering to the principle of data minimization. And enocoo has brought in additional safeguards for precisely this reason, that the protection of personal data is so important.
